Rs 2.5k/month for women, 200 units free electricity among 6 Congress Telangana ‘guarantees’ | India News

HYDERABAD: Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi announced Sunday six guarantees for poll-bound Telangana, including the Mahalakshmi scheme providing Rs 2,500 financial assistance to women every month, to be implemented if the party is voted to form the government.
“It has been my dream to see a Congress government in Telangana that will work for all sections of society,” she said during a public meeting in Tukkuguda, marking the 75th anniversary of the merger of the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad with the Indian Union in 1948.
The Mahalakshmi scheme, the highlight of the guarantees, will provide financial assistance of Rs 2,500 a month to women, offer LPG domestic gas cylinder refills for Rs 500, and ensure free travel for women in state road transport corporation buses.
The guarantees encompass various other benefits, such as financial aid of Rs 15,000 for farmers and tenant farmers, Rs 12,000 for agricultural labour, a Rs 500 bonus for paddy crops, free electricity up to 200 units for every household (including tenants and renters), house sites and Rs 5 lakh for those without their own homes, 250 square yard plots for Telangana statehood warriors, interest-free Vidya Bharosa cards worth Rs 5 lakh for students, Telangana International Schools in all mandals, Rs 4,000 pensions for the elderly, widows, weavers, and others, and a Rs 10 lakh Rajiv Arogyasri insurance cover for the poor.
Sonia’s speech, lasting less than five minutes, was met with enthusiastic support from the audience. She asked: “Will you all support Congress?” The people in the crowd raised their hands.
Her son and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi expressed the party’s determination to challenge not only chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s BRS in Telangana but also what he called the collaborative efforts of BRS, BJP, and AIMIM. He said these claim to be distinct parties, but are working together and supporting each other.
Rahul criticised the “partnership” between BRS, BJP, and AIMIM, noting that no serious cases have been filed against chief minister KCR or AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, despite corruption allegations. He accused PM Narendra Modi and BJP of selectively targeting opposition leaders with ED, CBI, or IT cases while ignoring corruption allegations within their own allies.
Rahul asserted that within 100 days, the BRS government would be ousted, and the new Congress government would fulfil all six promises made by Sonia Gandhi.
“Sonia Gandhi does not speak loudly but when she gives her word, she fulfils it. She had promised statehood and delivered it. Today, she promised six guarantees and I can assure you that all of them will be implemented from the day the first Congress cabinet is sworn in. People of Telangana can go to Karnataka and enquire whether Congress is fulfilling its five guarantees given to them or not,” he said.
The public rally followed the Congress Working Committee meeting in Hyderabad. For its part, the CWC claimed that the vision of achieving a “Golden Telangana” has remained unfulfilled since the state’s formation. It requested the people to rally behind Congress in the forthcoming assembly elections to transform this dream into reality.
